RootsBase: The Gil Scott-Heron Songbook

A new live music club - dedicated to presenting the very best in folk, trad and roots-based!

After a successful Edinburgh Fringe debut, Aki Remally and Fraser Urquhart stretch out and play a substantial set of jazz, funk and soul from the songbook of the Godfather of hip hop, Gil Scott-Heron.
So for those who don't know much about Gil, a brief history: A poet, jazz musician and rap pioneer who used mordant lyrics to express his views on politics and culture, throughout his 40-year career, Scott-Heron delivered a militant commentary not only on the African-American experience, but on wider social injustice and political hypocrisy.

Gil lived by this creed and throughout a magnificent musical career, he helped people again and again, with his willingness and ability to articulate deep truths, through his eloquent attacks on injustices and by his enormous compassion for people's pain.
Here, you can expect to hear some of Scott-Heron's most popular and loved musical works. Led by lead guitarist and vocalist Aki Remally, the Gil Scott-Heron Songbook band comprises some of Scotland's top jazz musicians that include pianist Fraser Urquhart, bassist Tom Wilkinson and drummer Max Popp.

The revolution will not be televised but it may happen on stage.
