Playwright Chris Ruffle delivers an atmospheric drama about the Second Opium War, populated by rarefied creatures from the Chinese and British royal courts and their military henchmen. The poor foot soldiers, as usual, pay the price for their power games, vanity and plunder, which can now to be found in London, Paris and Edinburgh.

It is 1860 and a small Anglo-French army finds itself before the walls of Beijing. How did it get there? More to the point, how will it get out? A drama strutting its stuff on the grotesque stage of Empire, directed by Mingyu Lin.

Each show will be followed by a daily tour (excluding 24th) of the newly opened East Asia Gallery in the National Museum of Scotland by a volunteer guide to further explore the themes in the show, from 14:30-15:00. 15 audience members max, sign-up on the day.

Cast: Rebecca Boey, Stephen Hoo, Camille Mallet de Chauny and Daniel York Loh.

Creative Team: Joe Hornsby (Lighting Design), Niclas Jeppsson (Sound Design), Cindy Lin (Set Design), Yiwen Lin (Costume Design) and Joel Tan (Dramaturge).
